Orpheus: To Hell and Back
A Game Boy–born action-puzzle myth retelling where Orpheus’s lyre charms, sleeps, or scares foes in 80s chibi pixel style.
Overview
Orpheus: To Hell and Back is a retro action-puzzle adventure from Studio Loading, Kibou Entertainment, and publisher Alunite Inc. Born as a physical Game Boy Color cartridge via Kickstarter, it now brings the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice to Steam in glorious 8-bit, 80s chibi-anime style. Descend into Hades, push blocks, lure enemies into traps, and swap between three lyre melodies — Charm, Sleep, and Fear — to open multiple routes through each labyrinth level. Available in English and Japanese for $2.99.

Gameplay
You play as Orpheus descending into a stylized underworld to rescue Eurydice. Core verbs are simple on paper — walk four directions, push blocks, pick up items — but every room is a compact action-puzzle stage where enemy placement and traps matter more than combat buttons.
Your main tool is the magical lyre. Switching melodies changes how enemies behave, so the same hallway can be cleared by herding foes into spikes, freezing a patrol in place, or yanking a monster into a gap. Levels reward reading the space before you play a note.
Three Lyre Melodies
Song of Charm pulls enemies toward Orpheus for a short window — ideal for dragging patrols onto pressure plates or into hazards. Song of Sleep locks foes in their current tiles so you can walk past or set up a push.
Song of Fear repels enemies away from you, useful for bouncing them into traps or clearing a choke point. Learning which melody opens which route is the game’s strategic depth: many rooms have more than one valid solution depending on timing and song choice.
Guides & Tips
First Descent Tips
Treat early rooms as a tutorial for song swapping, not speedrunning. Enter a screen, mark every hazard and patrol loop, then decide whether you need pull, freeze, or push. Switching songs mid-room is often safer than forcing Charm on every enemy.

Most damage in Orpheus comes from the environment, not button-mashing. Line yourself so Charm or Fear moves an enemy across spikes, fire, or a hole in one continuous pull. If the path is angled wrong, reposition Orpheus first — melodies radiate from your current tile.

Launch Impressions
Launch coverage frames Orpheus: To Hell and Back as a passion project that completed a rare arc: physical Game Boy Color cartridge first, then a $2.99 Steam port with original animated trailer beats. The pitch is clear — musical puzzle-action, cute 80s chibi pixels, English and Japanese support — aimed at handheld nostalgia fans rather than AAA spectacle.
At this price, the main risk is short runtime or uneven late-game room design; the main promise is authentic retro grammar with a clever lyre twist. Kickstarter overfunding (€16k+ vs €7.5k goal) suggests a ready niche audience for Game Boy–authentic puzzles on PC.
Demo & Community Feedback
Itch.io demo players often praise the myth theme and chiptune mood while calling early control schemes awkward — especially sign interaction and song-select button mapping. Studio Loading iterated on those notes (faster sign reads, clearer input options), which is a good signal for a small studio shipping on Steam.
Expect discussions to focus on whether three melodies stay fresh across the full dungeon loop, and whether boss encounters elevate the block-push baseline. Fans of Top-down GB adventures and musical puzzle toys should feel most at home.
Reddit Community
Reddit’s Game Boy crowd responded warmly to Orpheus: To Hell and Back during Kickstarter — posts on r/Gameboy, r/retrogaming, r/indiegames, and even r/latin highlight the cartridge ambition and chiptune-myth pitch. Commenters treat it as a passion project from a tiny team shipping real GB/GBC/SGB hardware support.
The recurring ask is whether controls and song-select mapping feel crisp on original hardware (and later on the Steam port). Fans of top-down GB adventures and musical puzzles are the clearest Reddit audience.
